The history of Getxo goes back to the early Middle Ages around the church of Santa Maria. Since then, up until the end of the XVIII century the inhabitants mostly consisted of farmers, cattle farmers and fishermen. These last ones were concentrated at the port of the district of Algorta. In the XIX century the district of Las Arenas was born. This soon became a tourist zone for the upper class to spend the summer thanks mainly to its extended beach. Nevertheless, when the construction of the outer port of Bilbao forced a raised wharf on this beach, the tourism moved towards the port of Algorta and the district of Las Arenas acquired a more residential character. The District of Neguri arose at the beginning of the XX century as the winter residence of wealthy families mainly coming from Bilbao and Madrid. Later, after the sixties, the construction of houses democratised things and a great number of families belonging to the middle-class moved there.
